Ames Watchman.
Sac City, Nov. 12.--Charles H. Glidden, foreman in the construction of the steel standpipe here was instantly killed yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock. The standpipe is up 85 feet and one of he quarter section of steel, weighing two or three tons having just been elevated to its position the men went up and began to rivet it on. When but two or three rivets had benn inserted the wind swayed the sheet of steel and it fell on the inside striking the end of the platform, breaking the chain supporting the platform and also breaking Mr. Glidden's hold, throwing him 85 feet to the stone foundation of the pipe. He was not badly mangled except about the head, which seems to have struck the bottom first. Another man was working with Mr. Glidden on the same scaffold but he caught hold of the chain and thus saved himself by climbing up the chain over the top and getting on the outside platform. It had been quite windy and the work was stopped a part of theim on account of the wind. Mr. Glidden was 38 years old and his family lives at Ames. Fremont Turner, of Des Moines, is the contractor in the erection of the standpipe.
