From Story County Watchman November 15, 1901

One of the oldest settlers of Story county, Z. Chance who formerly lived in Lincoln township, died at Ames on the 12th inst., aged 70 years. The funeral services were held at Ames yesterday under the ministration of Rev. Nye. He was one of the best of our many worthy citizens and all will be sorry to learn that the end has come at last.

E. Chance, to whom we have alluded as sick seriously several time lately, died in this city the first of the week and another old resident of the county has been taken to the better land where he will find quite a number of old time friends and relatives. He was one of the oldest settlers in Lincoln township and as such was well known to a large number of our people. He was one of the good men of the county and stood high in the esteem of all.
