From Story County Watchman July 20, 1900

Miss Kate Hemping living one mile northeast of Colo, was struck by train No. 15, fast mail, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, while trying to drive across the track two blocks west of the depot on her way to Sunday school. The horse was killed and Miss Hemping died three hours later from a fractured skull, striking her head on a rail. The funeral was held Tuesday at 10 o'clock under the auspices of the Eastern Star in the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. Banford.

Miss Kate Hemping was born in Dauphin county, Penn., Oct 15, 1851, and was killed by the fast mail train on the morning of July 15. She was therefore aged 48 years and 9 months. At four years of age her parents removed to Ogle county, Ill., shere they resided until 1866, when they came to Story county, Iowa, shere she lived until she met her sudden death while on her way to church. About 25 years ago Miss Hemping became a member of the Evangelical church in which she was greatly interested and of which she was a faithful and devoted member until her Master whom she loved and served called her from life, to reward. Miss Hemping leaves an aged mother, three brothers and two sisters to mourn her departure. These were all present at the funeral except one sister, who resides in Colorado. Besides the immediate relatives Miss Hemping leaes a host of warm personal friends who keenly feel their loss. The bereaved have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this their hour of grief.
