From Story County Watchman September 23, 1898

Ames Watchman.

Recently we noted that C. W. McElyea was at Dansville, New York, for medical treatment. He returned home the last of the week quite feeble yet able to be around, but rapidly grew worse and on Sunday, the 18th, his spirit passed to the great beyond. The last rites were held under the direction of the M. E. church Tuesday at 4 p. m. A number of the Excaliber Commandery of Boone, Nevada and Ames were present and took part in aid of Arcadia Lodge of Mason of which the deceased was an honored member. The attendance was quite large and one and all expressed appreciation of his merits as a citizen and exemplary husband and father. The age of Mr. McElyea was 41 years he had been a resident here for nearly his entire lifetime. He has been one of our most enterprising citizens and will be greatly missed by all who have best interests of Ames and Story county at heart. The funeral was largely attended by our citizens and the various civic societies of which he has always been a leader. His wife is a sister of J. A. Fitchpatrick of Nevada and is receiving the sympathy of all in her hour of trial.
