From Story County Watchman February 18, 1898

Yesterday the report reached this city that John B. Shedd had just been seriously injured by falling down an elevator shaft at Council Bluffs. It appears that the elevator broke and he caught a rope which dislodged a piece of iron, which fell upon his head loosening his hold on the rope and he fell to the he bottom some thirty feet. To-day the report is that he died as a result of the injuries. He was formerly engaged in business in this city and was well known to many of our people who are sorry to learn of the accident which had befallen him.
