From Story County Watchman October 22, 1897

Recently we noticed that Miss Widener was sick from diphtheria at Waterloo having gone ther to attend a camp meeting, and the result is given below from place under date of Friday, the 15th inst: A Miss Widener, of Nevada, Ia. died yesterday very suddenly, in an isolated house in Orange township from the effects of diphtheria. Miss Widener came to Waterloo some days ago to attend the German Baptist convention, and then being held in Orange township. About Sunday Oct. 3, she was suddenly taken ill. A physician was called who pronounced it diphtheria of the malignant form. She was quarantined and seemed to be recovering under careful treatment. The disease attacked the heart, however and yesterday she died very unexpectedly.
