Giles Cook was born in Schoharie county, New York, September 7th, 1812, from which place soon after, his parents moved near Worcester, Otsego county, New York, where he resided several years. From thence he moved to Ohio where he resided ten years. When in the spring of 1868 he came to Ames, Iowa, where he resided till his death, which occurred on the 4th day of April, 1890, being 77 years; six months and 27 days of age. Tho he leaves behind but a few near relatives, these were bound to him by the stonrgest ties of affection and love, who mourn his loss, yet they realize that time had taken the elasticity from his step, the vigor from his manhood, and that but little remained of his former self. But that might soul that shone forth with living refulgence in his eye, till death placed his chilling hand upon his brow, and claimed him as his own, and his spirit winged its flight to the regions of eternal rest. He is gone, and Ames by his death has lost one of her most energetic citizens, whose familiar form will be missed, yet remembered by her people with love and respect.
