John Nicholas Hemping (1818-1897)

Colo Watchman.

Last Monday occurred the funeral of J. W. Hemping, one othe oldest settlers in this part of Story county. Mr. Hemping passed away on Saturday last after a lingering illness of one year. The last two months were time of much suffering, but the end came as above stated. Mr. Hemping was born in Dauphin county, Pa., Oct. 17, 1818, and was 78 years, 4 months and 17 days old at his death. He was married to Eva Brosious April 11, 1841. Moved from Pennsylvania to Ogle county, Ill., in 1856, and from ther to Story county, Iowa, in 1866, where he has since resided on his farm about two miles east of Colo. He leave a wife three sons and four daughters. He was a member of the Evangelical church over 38 years and was a constant, devoted, christian man. The services were held in the Evangelical church by the pastor and was largely attended and interment was made in Colo cemetery.

The following resolutions were passed by Columbia Lodge
WHEREAS, It has pleased our heavenly father and the supreme grand master of the universe to call our beloved brother John N. Hemping from this earthly tabernacle to the celestial lodge above.
WHEREAS, the Lodge has lost an honored member, one who has cherished the three greatest principles of masonry, friendship, morality and brotherly love; to his family a dutiful, loving and faithful husband and father, th the community a peacable and hightly respected citizen, one who was always ready to stretch forth his hand to assist the needy and distressed, and the church has lost a devout member.
Resolved, that the hall of Columbia lodge, No. 292, be draped in mourning, that we extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of sorrow, that these resolutions be spread upon the records of the lodge, a copy presented to the family and sent to the county papers.
