From Story County Watchman July 31, 1896

A sad and fatal accident occured at Belle Plaine Tuesday morning about 100 feet west of Salt Creek bridge by which A. E. Green lost his life. He was formerly a conductor but had been set back to breaking. When the grave train on which he was employed approached Belle Plaine Green left the engine to go back over the train but by some means fell under the wheels and was killed. His body was terribly mangled and was dragged along the track for a considerable distance. Part of the corpse was found on the end of the bridge. One leg is missing and is supposed to be in the creek. His right arm and leg were cut off and we was otherwise mutilated. He lives at Boone, where he has a wife but no children. His body was brought to that city to be coffined. The train was a gravel train, engine 192, engineer Ed. Fisk, Conductor Durbin.

Mr. Green was formerly a resident of this city and has relatives now residing here who were almost horrified by the sudden stroke which has befallen him. The many friends of Mrs. Green extend to her their utmost sympathy in the calamity which has overtaken her.

The remains were brought to this city and laid to rest in the Nevada Cemetery beside a child which died several years ago.
