Maxwell Murmurings.

Last week we gave an account of the accidental shooting of S. J. Sherman, of Nevada township, on the Gamble farm just west of town, and his death which followed in a short time. The funeral was held on Thursday, Nov. 28, his death having occurred on the Tuesday previous. The remains were taken to the C. P. church at 10 a. m. Soon the house was full to overflowing. The choir sang beautifully. Rev. Ferguson conducted the service, assisted by Revs. Bentley and Doty. Nearly all of Mr. Sherman's neighbors from Mullen settlement were present and the pall bearers were all from that neighborhood. The remains were interred at Iowa Center beside those of a child that died a number of years ago. Silas J. Sherman was born in Terre Haute, Henderson county, Ill., Feb. 1, 1855; came to Iowa with his parents when only ten years of age, and settled in Story county. The family lived in Nevada for quite a while. Mr. S. was married to Mary Gamble Dec. 21, 1879. In 1886 he bought the Wm. Mullen farm in Nevada township and settled on it. He was an industrious man and a good manager. He prospered and everything seemed to be working well with him until death cut short all plans and arrangements for the future. He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, and a good citizen. At the last election he was chosen township trustee without opposition, and, had he lived until the first of the year, he would have entered upon the duties of the office. He leaves a wife and two children--a daughter of 14 and a son of 10. His mother is living and makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Flickinger, near Elwell. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family in their time of deep distress.
