This community was terribly shocked on Tuesday afernoon when the word went out that Silas Sherman, of Nevada township, had been shot on the Gamble farm just west of town and was in a dying condition. The facts, so far as we can learn, are as follows: Mr. S. and wife came down from home in the forenoon to visit Mrs. S.'s mother, Mrs. J. D. Gamble. In the afternoon Mr. S. and his brother-in-law, Will Gamble, took their guns and went out for little hunt. On their return they stopped to examine a corn crib that needed some repairs. Some way in stooping or raising up, Mr. S.'s gun was discharged, emptying the whole charge into his side, the shot passing into the chest. He at once fell to the ground in an unconscious state. He was taken to the house and physicians went for, but he survived only a short time, without regaining consciousness. Mr. S. was highly esteemed in this community, where he was well known, and where his wife was brought up. Much sympathy is felt for his wife and two children. His aged mother lives with her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Flickinger, near Elwell. The funeral took place on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, in the C. P. chruch here, after which the remains were interred in the cemetery at Iowa Center. Mr. S. had been elected trustee for Nevada township at the recent election, and would have entered upon the office the first of the year had he lived.
