From Story County Watchman January 12, 1894

It will be remembered that some months since we gave an account of the missing of a resident of this county by the name of W. H. H. Grove, and the general supposition that he had committed suicide. The remains were found this week just east of the Skunk river near Hannum's mill, and a short distance from the residence of Mr. Sheppy. The flesh had all dissolved to earth, and only the skeleton and clothes remained. This was enough to identify them, and Thursday they were interred in the family lot in the cemetery with appropriate ceremonies. It is a sad affair, and all are touched with sorrow over the ending.

The following is the article from when William Grove went missing, September 22, 1893 in the Story County Watchman:

Wednesday Wm. H. Grove of Franklin township started from home ostensibly to look after some stock but is reported to have been seen near Hannum's Mill, since which time no trace of him can be found, although a systematic and thorough search has been made. He had money in both Ames banks but none has been drawn out and parties were in Nevada yesterday to see if he had drawn out that which he had here but we understand that he had not. It is feared that some accident had befallen him. A thorough search continued yesterday and if without result will be to-day, in order that the worst may be known, if anything had befallen him. He is one of the well-to-do farmers in that part of the county and no reason for thus absenting himself is known. Public announcement of this fact was given on the Fair Ground last evening.

From the Story County Watchman September 29, 1893

Last week we gave an account of the missing of W. H. Grove, of Franklin township. Up to this morning no account of his presence has been found. It is now thought that the body will not be found for some time. A reward of $100 is offered for a knowledge of his where abouts. Parties before this have left home and remained away for year being mourned for dead. Some of the circumstances reported indicate that such might be the case in this instance but the future alone will develop the facts.
