From Story County Watchman April 7, 1893

OBITUARY.--Charles--Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Totten was born in Bement, Piatt County, Ill., April 22, 1881. He was a bright and when well a cheerful boy, but he has been afflicted with rheumatism each winter for several years. Last February the attack was unusually severe; since which he has been a great sufferer most of the time. Many times, unless asked, his only expression of suffering was in loss of his usual cheerfulness, or setting in silence. Death came to his relief Sunday morning April 2. The funeral was conducted by Rev. W. W. Danner at the home west of town on Monday at 1 p. m. A large number of sympathizing friends were in attendance, all apparently bearing in mind that this estimable family having been in the community but little more than a year, were likely to feel their afflictions more than if they were surrounded by long friends. The pupils of Charlies room in the public school, Miss May Boynton teacher, expressed their love for him by marching in body behind the hearse and depositing flowers on the lowered coffin in the grave. The broken family circle is composed of parents and three brothers.

Life is real, life is fleeting
But a goal beyond the tomb,
Awaits the happy greetings
Of the loved ones coming home.
