From Story County Watchman April 1, 1892
Death came very unexpectedly to the family of Mr. James Noble, living 7 miles north of Belle Plaine, on Tuesday, March 8, 1892. The family being well known in this vicinity some of the particulars may be of interest to our readers. Mrs. James Noble, formerly Mahala Hipshur, daughter of A. Hipshur, esq., on Monday evening, March 7th; being alone in the sitting room of her home, the children having retired-- her husband not being home-- feeling tired threw down some spreads near the stove and laid down to read her bible. After reading sleep over came her. After awhile she awoke to find her clothes on fire. She screamed and ran from the house. Her daughter who was upstairs asleep, heard her calls and got to her mother only in time to find her most horribly burned. Assistance and medical aid was called but could do little for her. She lingered for about 24 hours. Mrs. Noble leaves a husband, a daughter about 17 years, and two boys 13 and 15 years old. She was in the 38th year, was raised in the vicinity of Ames, coming here a baby. Her father and mother and three sisters, Mesdames John Shearer, J. C. Adams, and Z. Cochran are now residents in this vicinity. Her husband is a son of Mr. James Noble and for many years resided in this vicinity. The death of Mrs. Noble is peculiarly sad to her many friends.--Int.*
