DIED--For some time the life of Vincent Tomlinson has been but a breath following the vigor of a stalwart manhood and, although his suffering has not been great, for eighteen long months he has battled with the fatal disease. Conscious of his nearing end, he bore the knowledge with the bravery which characterized his action in the period of his health and strength.
Shortly after noon today the end came. It came suddenly though it had been watched for many days and of his family only the wife was present at the last moments. The bereavements which they feel is none the less deep from the preparation which his long illness forced them to realize, and the sorrow and sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances in the city and county is theirs. His death was indeed the close of a useful career and will be sincerely lamented by the many who knew him.
Vincent Tomlinson was born in 1824, October 6th, in Pickaway county, Ohio. He early learned the trade of a carpenter, combining the work of a teacher in winter with his trade in summer. In 1856 he removed to Iowa, settling in Nevada where he resided for twelve years. He removed to Boone in 1868 and has been active as a contractor and builder, erecting many of the substancial buildings of the town. In 1871 he was elected city clerk, which position he held nine years in succession. During the war he enlisted as a member of the Thirty Second Iowa Infantry as a private in August, 1862, and earned for himself the rank of second lieutenant. During the war he contracted a disease of the bowels, which finally developed into the disease which caused his death. He was discharged on account of disability. He was married in 1845 to Miss Elizabeth Bethards, who with two children, Mrs. H. C. Carringer, of this city and C. S. Tomlinson, now of Springfield, Mo., survive him. --Boone News.
