From Story County Watchman April 19, 1889
John Ferguson returned from Dakota last Saturday night. He had been summoned there as our readers know by the death of his daughter, Mrs. Tibbs, in the recent terrible prairie fires. He reports a shocking condition of things over the burnt district. Dead stock can be found in many places lying on the prairie; and many people are houseless and homeless. He brought one of his grandchildren home with him. Mr. Tibbs, when he left him was getting better and it was thought that he would recover; although he will certainly bear the scars of the fire all this life. Our readers know most of the particulars already. Mr. Tibbs was burned in trying to save his wife and child. The child died in about an hour; Mrs. Tibbs died the next day. Their clothing burned from their bodies; and Mr. Tibbs had to leave them in a well, to protect them from the storm, while he ran two miles to a neighbors' place for aid.--Maxwell Tribune.
