From Story County Watchman June 12, 1885

Cambridge

On Saturday last a very sad affair happened R. Bullards son Miller who was drowned in the river at this place. He with another boy went down to gather flowers and he went in where the boys had been in the habit of wading to a little island. By the recent rains the river was about four feet higher than usual, and was over his head. Not being able to swim he was soon drowned. The body has not been recovered at this writing. Mr. Bullard's father and two brothers, Mrs. B's mother and sister and her husband are with the bereaved family. Everything has been done that could be to find the body but as yet in vain. Miller was the eldest son, fourteen years old a smart active lad. Mr. and Mrs. Bullard have the sympathy of the whole country in this their great sorrow.
