Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock a son of S. R.* Bonde was drowned in the river one mile south of here. He attempted to wade across the river and took but a few steps before he went under and did not rise again. A large party have been searching for the body but up to this (Tuesday) evening it has not been found.
Further down the page in the same column:
LATER:--July 12d, Wednesday.-- The body of the boy that was drowned here Sunday afternoon, was found about one mile south of the place at which he was drowned. The body had lodged on a foot log crossing the river and was discovered by the Doolittle boys. It was in a very bad condition, being almost black. The remains were brought to town and dressed as well as could be done in the shape it was, and placed in a coffin before the arrival of the parents who arrived at about 7 o'clock in the evening, when the father only took a last look at the lost one, after which the funeral services were performed.
*The submitter believes this should be J. R. Bonde as Jens R. Bonde was the only Bonde in Story County in the 1885 census and he was in Howard Township placing him in the Story City area.
