From Story County Watchman June 20, 1884
SUDDEN DEATH.--On Tuesday evening while attending to stock Mr. Lewis Applegate, living on the Cambridge road, just south of town suddenly fell dead. He was one of the oldest residents in the county, having lived here more than thirty years. He was a native of Indiana and about 65 years of age. He was one of the staunch men of the co., honest and upright in all his dealing, and none can say aught of him but to his praise. He leaves a family of grown up children, and aged companion to mourn his loss. The funeral came off yesterday, from his late residence, and the remains now repose in the cemetery at Nevada. The procession was large and showed the general esteem in which he was held.
