From Ames paper July 9, 1880
DIED.
In this city July 4, 1880, of cancer in the stomach, Mr. Geo. R. Ross, aged 58 years.
The subject of this notice was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, July 4, 1822, and departed this life on the 58th anniversary of his birth day. He had been a resident of Ames for several years, and while here he made many warm and lasting friends. He was universally esteemed and respected by all our people for the pure, upright and manly life he led while among them. He was a devout christian, and died in full faith of utter salvation in the other world. His last sickness was long and painful one, though he bore himself through the ordeal with brave fortitude, and at the end with calm resignation committed his soul to God without a fear.
At his request (having long been a sufferer of disease) a post mortiem examination was made on his remains by Dr. Fairchild. By this it was found that an excavated cancerous ulcer about three inches in diameter existed near the smaller end of the stomach. In the center of the excavation was a perforation about three-quarters of an inch in diameter which was covered, however, by the left lobe of the liver being cemented to the stomach by the adhesive inflamation. There was, also other adhesions. The pancreas was entirely involved in the cancerous change. This condition had, no doubt, supervened upon a long standing catharral inflamation of the stomach.
Mr. Ross leaves three children, Mrs. Peter Cassell, Mrs. Frank Spaulding and Miss Louise, also a most devoted wife, to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church, Monday forenoon.
