From Story County Watchman July 29, 1881

Once more Death's never failing shaft has alighted in our midst this time bearing from us, Thomas, second son of John and Margaret Counihan.

Deceased was born in this county in September 1855. About one year ago he thought to seek the far west and accordingly with that intention atarted for Kokomo, Col. O fatal, foolish trip. While there he contracted a disease called Mountain Fever which gradually gained strength and finally terminated in Consumption. Last January he returned to his home in Richland township, since which time he has been slowly but surely sinking down to an early grave.

I have had to add that the parents done every thing within the bounds of human power to alleviate his sufferings, but alas, in vain, and to day a large and saddened concourse of people followed his cold and lifeless form to its final resting place--the grave.

Thomas thou art gone to rest,
Lifes toils and cares are o'er;
Sorrow, sin and suffering now
Shall ne'er distress thee more.

Thomas thou art gone to rest,
Thy form no more we'll see,
With silent pulse abating breath
Thomas we in time must follow thee.

H. E. NOTHOMB,
