Myrtle “Bun” Zaletel, 91, died October 12, 2010 at the The Life Center in Des Moines. Born Myrtle Douglas Bunch on September 27, 1919 in Philadelphia, she spent her childhood years in her beloved Bucks County, PA. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, VA and received nurses’ training at Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her desire for more hands-on patient care took her half-way across the country to the Mayo Clinic where she graduated from their Physical Therapy program. She enlisted in the U.S. Army where she met her husband of 53 years, Joe, who preceded her in death in 2000.
Following the war while Joe did graduate work at ISU in Ames, IA and caring for two small children, Bun began using her “gift of touch” treating polio patients. After moving to Des Moines she spent over 25 years at Mercy Hospital as the revered physical therapist, “Mrs. Z”; she served God and others as a devoted member and tireless volunteer at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Des Moines.
She is survived by her sister Devona Thomas of Arlington, VA; children, Hank Zaletel (Linda), Nevada, IA; Kay Colacino, West Des Moines, IA; Doug Zaletel (Lee), North Liberty , IA ; Ted Zaletel (Nancy), Urbandale, IA , and Cora Zaletel, Pueblo, CO; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Visitation was Friday, October 15th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Des Moines, IA. A prayer service followed. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, October 16th, also at Holy Trinity. Memorial gifts may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, both in Des Moines, IA.
