Florence “Ann” Bates, 85, of Ames, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010. Services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Florence “Ann” Bates, 85, of Ames, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at Madrid Home in Madrid. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Madrid Home. A private family burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Florence Ann Bates was born June 30, 1925, in England, to Harry and Emma Herrod. She served her country at the Royal Ordinance Factory in England. They supplied ammunitions to the soldiers during World War II. In Ames, she was employed at Bournes, retiring in 1995.

She married Robert Wood, and to this union two children were born. Following his death, she married Arthur Bates Sr.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara LaMotte, of Des Moines; one son, Kenneth Wood, of Ames; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one sister; and one nephew.
