THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, October 5, 2010.

Former Ames resident Mary Janet MacDonald Dunlap, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, in Bemidji, Minn.

She was preceded in death by husband, Zac; parents, Edith and Gilmour; and brothers, Gilmour and Donald.

She is survived by sister, Ruth (Poody) Lamoureaux; children, Marilyn (Dunlap) Page, Zac Dunlap (Bunny), Barbara Bryson (Bill) and Jody Dunlap (Mark Schermann); grandchildren, Brian Page (Elizabeth), Bradley Page (Amy), Bill Bryson III (Erin), Katie Bryson, and Jack and Joe Schermann; and great-grandchild, Gavin Page.

Born and raised in Ames, Mary Janet graduated from Iowa State University where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and crowned the first Veishea Queen. In 1939, she married high school sweetheart Zac Roy Dunlap and they were happily married 62 years. While her husband served in the Army during Word War II, she volunteered as a nurse’s aide. Later she was an active community volunteer including the Presbyterian Church, Campfire Girls, Boy Scouts, PTA and PEO. After retirement, they enjoyed time at their cabin on Pike Bay in northern Minnesota, and traveling throughout North America in their motor home. Later in life, they moved to Bemidji, Minn., where they lived for many happy years. Mary Janet spent the last months of her life at GoldPine Home in Bemidji, and the family would like to gratefully thank the staff for their loving care.

MJ will always be remembered for her love of family, sense of humor, kindness and fair play. She instilled a love of adventure and nature in her children. And of course they’ll never forget her yummy lemon bars.

Mary Janet requested no service or memorials.
