THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, October 1, 2010.

Anna Baldus Johnson, 94, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Becker Funeral and Cremation Service has been entrusted with arrangements.

Anna Marie Johnson was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Story City, to Bertha (Jacobs) and John A. Johnson. She graduated from Story City High School in 1934. On June 17, 1935, Anna married Ed Baldus. They farmed near Story City for nine years, moving to a farm near Kamrar where they raised five children. In 1965, Ed suffered heart problems, and they moved to Jewell. Ed passed away in June 1972. In July 1977, Anna married Martin L. Johnson, and they spent summers in Jewell and wintered in Texas. In January 2008, Martin passed away at the age of 94. Anna had worked a short while at the Dairy Sweet and for many years at the Dime Store in Jewell. Anna was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Jewell.

Anna enjoyed her family and friends. Family dinners and picnics with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her the greatest joy. Anna crocheted the most beautiful afghans, and each of her children, grandchildren and most, if not all, of her great-grandchildren received the gift of one of her afghans. But she will be remembered by all as the lady with a beautiful smile and optimistic attitude. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Anna is survived by daughters, Rosalie Olson, of Des Moines, Carol (Larry) Perkins, of Marion, and Linda (Ron) Ries, of Ames; son, Steve Baldus, of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Howard Johnson, of Story City; daughter-in-law, Jane Baldus, of Jewell; three stepchildren, Steve Johnson, of Haywarden, Shannon (Ron) Craig, of Williamsburg, and Susan (Gary) Hudson, of Boone; daughter–in-law, Marilyn Heinish, of Dubuque; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and eight step-grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Edward Baldus and Martin Johnson; sons, Richard Baldus and David Baldus; son-in-law, Harlan Olson; and grandson, Patrick Baldus.
