Died at her home in Elkhart township, Polk county, Iowa July 31, 1896, Mrs. Matilda Ann Campbell, one of the early settlers of Polk County. Her first husband was Lemuel Venneman and the generosity and hospitality of Uncle Lem and Aunt Tillie, as they were affectionately known, were proverbial throughout the country. They are the parents of nine children, of whom all but two are living, namely: W. J. and B. J. Venneman of Indian Creek, Mrs. Dorothy Harvey of Des Moines and four other daughters residing in Polk and Story counties. After the death of Mr. Venneman, the subject of this sketch married Mr. John Campbell of Polk county. She was a thoroughly kind and christian woman, in early life a member of the Baptist Church, but at the time of her death of the United Brethren Church. Very instructive and impressive funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. L. Golden of Des Moines and very largely attended, were held in the Grove near Byer's cemetery, a most fitting place for the occasion. She rests in place amid the scenes of her childhood of her mature years.
