THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 26, 2010.

Harold L. Smith died on August 18, 2010 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, KS.

He was born on October 30, 1929 to Harry and Clara Smith in Perry, IA. He married (Mary) Louise Johnson on August 19, 1951 in Carthage, MO. Harold and Louise spent the last year in Newton, Kansas with their daughter Pamela while Harold received treatments for Lymphoma.

Harold received his undergraduate degree from McPherson College in 1952 and his divinity degree from Bethany Theological Seminary in 1955. He also received his Masters degree in education from Drake University in 1964.

Most of Harold’s and Louise’s married life was spent in central Iowa where Harold was a Pastor for the Church of the Brethren in Maxwell, IA for over forty-two years. Harold used his educational degree in his position as a guidance counselor in the Maxwell and Des Moines school systems for thirty-three years. Harold has been honored many years through awards recognizing his leadership in the New Horizons Program in the Des Moines school system. His compassionate work with youth in the inner city connecting them with support networks, the community, and employers impacted many lives.

As a part time farmer on the family’s home place in Adel, he found tremendous pleasure working on the 110 year old farm home and farming the land that belonged to his great grandfather. In his retirement years Harold loved spending time with his family — including 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren — and friends and continued his passion for reading and learning. Harold also loved gardening and wood working, making beautiful wooden crosses for many friends and family, and going fishing whenever he could.

Harold is survived by his wife: Mary Louise Smith of Adel, IA; Son Michael Smith of Boston, MA; Daughter and son in Law Pamela and Wayne Burns of Newton, KS; Grandchildren Alicia Jayne, Megan Small, and Chasity, Jack, Benjamin, Matthew, Adam and Evan Smith and Great Grandchildren Luke, Olivia, and Landon Jayne; two sisters: Etha Quinlan and Sun City West, AZ and Mary Alice Landhuis of Columbia, MO, and many nieces and nephews.
