THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 10, 2010.

Eileen Marie Kohler, 85, surrounded by her loving family, died at her home Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at Remsen Cemetery in Remsen. Following the service, the family would like to invite all of Eileen’s friends and relatives to join them at Beck Park for a time of fellowship. The family requests that if you would like, please feel free to come to the services in casual clothing such as an ISU shirt, your favorite high school shirt, a Chicago Cubs or Dodgers shirt, or even your favorite fishing shirt.

Eileen was born June 22, 1925, in Chicago, to Curt and Josephine Gilweit. She moved to southern California when she was 3. She graduated from high school in the Los Angeles area, and during World War II, she worked for the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper. She met her future husband, Herbert Kohler, when they were set up on a blind date by one of Eileen’s sisters-in-law. They fell in love and were married at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas on Jan. 15, 1950.

In 1950, Eileen and Herb moved back to the Kohler family farm northwest of Remsen. There she helped her husband farm while raising their six children. She was involved at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Remsen. She attended every school event her children were in, and she also was a Cub Scout leader. She and Herb enjoyed going to Minnesota in the summer, especially after they found a little cabin named Cedar Chest, and they spent their winters in Texas. After her husband of 46 years died, she spent several years living in Remsen before moving to Ames.

In Ames, she enjoyed going to the Heartland Senior Center. She also joined Bethesda Lutheran Church, were she volunteered at both the clothing room and the food pantry. She had 10 grandchildren that kept her busy attending just as many events as she possibly could. She was an avid reader, a great sewer and knitter, and a huge fan of ISU, Ames High, Wamego High and the Chicago Cubs. She also continued to go to Cedar Chest in the summer where she could catch more walleyes than the average fisherman.

She is survived by her six children, Mary Brinkman, of Aurelia, Henry (Anne) Kohler, Sue Kohler and Keith (Peggy) Kohler, all of Ames, Curt Kohler, of Le Mars, and Eric (Kim) Kohler, of Wamego, Kan.;10 grandchildren, Andy Kohler, Robyn Kohler, Kerry Kohler, Geoffery Kohler and fiancée Jackie Loeffelholz, Sarah (Dustin)Tritz, Clare Kohler, James Kohler, Jonathan (Ashleigh) Kohler, Travis Kohler and B.J. Kohler; three great-grandchildren, Haileigh Kohler, Oaklee Kohler and Kayden Kohler; and one brother-in-law, Earl Helzer, of Sun City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and six brothers and two sisters, Jack, Dick, Edwin, Pat, Audrey, Bob, Mike and Stan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that nonperishable food items be donated to the food pantry at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames or the food pantry in your community.
