James “Jim” Donald Smith, 69, of Colo, died Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Jim was born August 18, 1940, the son of Harold and Lois (Eckhart) Smith. Jim graduated from Colo High School in 1958 and attended Iowa State University. He was united in marriage to Meryle Lively on August 12, 1962 in State Center, Iowa. Jim was a farmer and enjoyed golfing, fishing and pheasant hunting. Jim loved and was proud of his grandchildren and great-grandson. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Story County Pork Producers, Pheasants Forever, Land O’ Lakes Board, and was a former member of the Story County Planning and Zoning Board, the Jaycees, and was former president of the Farmers Coop in Colo.

Jim is survived by his wife: Meryle Smith, of Colo, Iowa; a daughter: Erin Smith of Colo, Iowa; two sons and daughters-in-law: David (Beth) Smith of Mount Vernon, Iowa, Jay (Renee) Smith of Colo, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Abbey Smith (Colby Newkirk), Alex Smith (Brandie McCracken); Jenna Smith, Haley Smith, Kelcey Smith, Ashley Smith; a great grandson: Logan Newkirk; and two sisters: Linda (John) Greenlee of Davenport, Iowa, and Brenda Smith of Hudson, Iowa.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
