John Otto Hagen

John Hagen, who has been confined to his home with illness for the past 15 months, passed away on Monday evening about fifteen minutes after seven. Mr. Hagen has been a sufferer with tuberculosis for a long time, and, although he tried to fight off the disease, it was a losing battle and he succumbed on last Monday.

John Otto Hagen was born on September 19, 1866, in Stavanger, Norway, and died at Roland on April 6, 1925, being 58 years, 6 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He came to America when he was 16 years old, and was a sailor for a number of years, traveling extensively throughout the world. Later he enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge after four years of service.

After receiving his discharge he came to Story County in 1897, and was married to Miss Sadie Harrison of Cambridge, on December 5, 1898. Seven children were born to this union. Orville, Erma, Gertrude, Margaret, and Betty are living, Hazel died seven years ago at the age of two, and Jerry died nearly two years at the age of four.

They moved to Roland in the fall of 1900 and have resided here continuously since that time. Three years ago he entered the employ of the Manhattan Oil Company as a manager of the filling station at this place, but after a year was forced to quit work on account of his health, and his children have been in charge of the station since that time. John was well liked and had many friends here who will miss his presence now that he is gone. Besides his wife and five children, he also leaves four brothers, Emil at Admiral, Canada; Martin at Stanley, N.D.; Nick at Rockham, S.D.; and Anton of near Nevada; and two sisters in Norway. His parents have both preceded him in death.
