DEATH OF COLONEL JOHN SCOTT

Colonel John Scott for nearly forty years one of the most prominent citizens of this town and county, and for the past few years a resident of Des Moines, died at his home in that city at 9:20 this morning. The announcement is made in a telegram from his daughter, Miss Mary Avis Scott; and particulars are lacking save that it has been known to his friends for some time that he was failing in strength and was becoming quite feeble. Nevertheless, he had a large part of his old regiment, the 32d Iowa, at his home at the regimental reunion during state fair week and it can only be very recently that his condition has become at all critical. Still it surprises none of his friencs that he has finally succumbed to the weight of years; but the announcement will be received with very great regret.
Col. Scott was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, April 14, 1824, and was therefore well on his eightieth year. He was of Scotch-Irish ancestry and of a family that included many distinguished men. He was a teacher, an editor, a lawyer, a soldier of the Mexican and Civil wars, once lieutenant governor of Iowa, a member twice of the state senate, grand master of the Masonic order, president of that state fair, a general promoter of the welfare of the town, county and state in which he lived. He was a man of large capacity who mixed in human affairs in many ways and who gave a reputation to the community that was so furtunate as to include him among its citizens.
His last years were spent in comfortable and well earned retirement with his wife and daughter beside him and in the enjoyment of the speceial regard of his old friends and comrades. He lived a long and very useful life and has passed peacefully to his reward. More extended notice of his varied and active career will be given next week. There are yet no advices of the funeral; but the family lot is in Nevada cemetery, and it is presumed that he will be buried here.
