THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

Kathleen (Kay) H. Valen, 86, of Story City, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Bethany Manor. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Kathleen was born July 29, 1923, in Story City, to John M. and Carrie Olivia (Severaid) Valen. She received her education at Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, graduating in 1942. She was a caregiver for her mother for 10 years until she passed away in 1952.

As the years went by, she became interested in the Commission for the Blind in Des Moines. After completing her training in the Adult Orientation and Adjustment Center, she became a switchboard operator and receptionist. She held that position 20 years, until retiring in 1984.

She moved back to Story City and spent her time with community activities and volunteering with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. She entered Bethany Manor in 2004.

She is survived by one brother, John (Dorothy) Valen, of Story City; two sisters, Ruth Valen, of Story City, and Hannah Ellis, of Linden, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lawrence Valen and C. Joseph Valen; three half-sisters; and four half-brothers.

Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Bethany Manor in Story City.
