Aged Resident Passes Away

Early Pioneer Lady of Howard Township Passed Away Last Sunday at Ripe Age of Eighty Years, Funeral Held Tuesday Afternoon

Mrs. Anna Enes passed quietly away on Sunday afternoon, July 16, 1911, after only a weeks illness, her death being quiet as her life had been. She was surrounded by her immediate family who had been expecting the end for several days and she passed away as though going to sleep. With her death passes away another of the early pioneers of Howard township, she having come here just following the Civil War.

Anna Enes was born in Voss, Norway, June 11, 1831, and was 80 years, 1 month and 5 days old when called to her eternal rest. In 1854 she came to this country with several others, making her home near Lisbon, Ill, where she lived with her husband, Nels Johnson, until 1865, when they moved to Story county, Iowa, settling on a farm two miles northeast of here. The next year Mr. Johnson died. In 1868, she as again married to Thomas Enes, who lived until 1899. Ten years ago she moved to Roland, where she has since made her home. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. O. Enes, and twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren besides other relatives and numerous friends. Another daughter, Mrs. K. Woster, died a little more than two years ago. She is also survived by one foster son, Andrew Enes of this place.

Mrs. Enes was one of the quiet and reserved ladies who went about her work in peace with all whom she came in contact. All who knew her claimed her friendship. When Bergen congregation was organized, she with her husband were among the first to aid in the organization and work of getting a church edifice built and to this congregation she has always been a faithful member.

The funeral services were held from Bergen church on Tuesday afternoon, a large number of her friends being present to cast a last look upon the face of a loved one. The funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. G. Smedal, after which interment took place in the Roland cemetery. The floral offerings were many and very pretty. The Record extends to the sorrowing families its most sincere sympathy in the hour of bereavement.
