Obituary
Died, at the residence of her son, Bedent B. Gallup, in Summit, N. Y. on December 13th, 1880, Mrs. Permelia Gallup, nearly 85 years of age.
The writer of this was the youngest of a family of eight children, six boys and two girls, who called the deceased by the hallowed name of mother. Her maiden name was Baird, was born in New Jersey, January 16, 1796, and consequently lacked only about one month of being four score and five years of age. In her infancy her parents moved to the frontier of the then infant Republic, being as far west in New York state as Montgomery county, on the Mohawk, from whence in a few years they moved to Schoharie county. In 1815, she was united in marriage to Nathan Gallup, who as her constant companion till 1865, nearly fifty years. Since her widowhood, she has resided on the homestead farm of her fourth son, B. B. Gallup, and has nearly always enjoyed good health, made her own bed, and in a short time has passed away. For seventy years she had lived a consistent christian life as a member of the Methodist Church, and brought up her children to believe in the same christian principles. Of her eight children, one only had preceded her to the spirit land, although all but the youngest are from 52 to 64 years of age. A kinder mother, one more devoted to the true interests of her family, could not be. As long as reason and mind last, here memory will be cherished and name revered by all of those whose infant steps she guided to manhood and womanhood. Farewell.
