Sanford K. Gooden
Sanford K. son of Samuel and Mary Gooden was born at Colfax, Iowa, May 23, 1867 and passed away at his home Wednesday, August 30, 1944 at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 7 days, after a year of illness.
He grew to manhod in that community where he helped provide a home for his widowed mother. He followed the occupation of farming and engineer for threshing crews in the Colfax and Mingo communities for many years.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Meyers, January 18, 1894 at the home of the bride’s parents near Maxwell and they were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on January of this year. They began housekeeping on a farm near Colfax, later they lived in the Peoria and Farrar neighborhoods until 1912 when they moved to their present homestead near Maxwell. To this union was born one son, Ray, previous to this they had adopted a son, Charlie, also taking into their home a girl, who they raised and reared into womanhood.
He unitied with the Church of the Brethern when a young man which he served faithful until his health failed. He served many years as Sunday School Superintendent also in the capacity of Deacon until the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, who passed away about six months ago.
Surviving are the sons, Charlie and Ray, daughter-in-law Alice and two grandchildren, Carroll and Barbara; two brothers Allen Gooden of Wenatchee, Washington and Oscar Gooden, of Shovel Lake, Minn. and four sisters, Mrs. Nora Faidley, of Colfax; Mrs Pearl Carr, of Worthington, Minn. , Mrs. Ida Turner of Tabor, Iowa and Mrs. Lizzie Meyers, of Maxwell besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Brethern Church at 2 o’clock with his pastor,m Rev. J. D. Brower in charge.
The music was furnished by Miss Iva French, Mrs. Jennie Kirk, Jimmie Beal and Orlando Holtby with Miss Dorothy Beal at the piano. The songs were: “Shall We Gather At the River,” “Going Down the Valley,” and “Sweet Bye and Bye.”
The beautiful floral offerings were arranged and cared for by Mrs. Hazel Witmer and Mrs. Margaret Meyers. The pall bearers were his nephews; Clarence, Roy and Cleo Faidley, Arlie Meyers, Keith Meyers and Fay Rupp. Burial was in the family plot in the Brethern Cemetery.
Relatives and friends attending form a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Gooden, of Shovel Creek, Minn.; Mrs. Pearl Carr of Worthington, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Turner, of Tabor, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Levi Faidley, Clareance Faidley, Cleo Faidley, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Faidley, all of Colfax; Mrs. T. U. Reed, of Linden, Iowa; and Mrs. Eva York, of Adel; Jim Hildreth, of Bondurant; Mrs. R. A, Kinzle, Mrs. Gleason Rodifer and daughter, Lorene, Ira Klinghman, Mr and Mrs. Frank Faidley and Mrs. Nora Faidley, all of DesMoines.
