MRS. SAMPSON DIED LAST WEEK
FUNERAL HELD MONDAY FOR AGED RESIDENT OF COMMUNITY
Mrs. Alice Sampson died Friday morning at her home following an extended illness. Although she had been confined to her home for some time, she was able to be up and around until about a week before she died, when she contracted pneumonia, which caused her death at 9:00 o'clock Friday forenoon.
Alice Weeks was born at Newark, Ill., March 25, 1847, and died at Roland April 14, 1933, at the age of 86 years and 20 days.
She was married to Joe Johnson in 1876 and a few years later they came to this community where she had lived for 48 years. They lived on a farm the first year and then moved into town, where Mrs. Sampson built a hotel building, now occupied by the Skromme Seed Company, and she operated a hotel business for many years. She retied from the business about thirty years ago, but continued to own the building until the present time.
Her husband died in 1895 and she was married again to A. Sampson on October 24, 1901. Mr. Sampson died August 14, 1929, and was the last surviving veteran of the Civil War in Roland.
Mrs. Sampson is survived by on brother, Lars W. Weeks of Newark, Ill., who arrived here a few hours after her death.
The funeral was held at the home and in Bergen church Monday afternoon, Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiating. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were J. E. Michaelson, John A. Omvig, J. V. Rasmusson, John T. Johnson, Dr. J. A. Snyder and R. M. Peck.
Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were L. W. Weeks of Newark, Ill., Mrs. Johnnie Sampson and daughter Vivian of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ballard and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fisher of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Samson Sampson, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sampson of McCallsburg, Mrs. Helgeson, Mrs. Pete Vickra, Mrs. John Sampson and Ivan Sime of Radcliffe, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sampson of Garden City, Mr. Sunde of Estherville, and Mrs. Edw. Helland of Thompson.
