Ruth Parsons Ryg, 98, of Huxley passed away March 9, 2010 at the Madrid Home Community in Madrid, IA. Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 13 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater. Ruth was born December 24, 1911 to William Floyd and Emma (McCoy) Parsons in Des Moines, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Clarence Ryg of Slater in 1942.

She was active in Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, and American Legion. She graduated from Des Moines North high School in 1930 and Drake University with a B.A. degree in 1934. She was a pianist and accompanied many musical groups.

Ruth began her teaching career at the high school in Mondamin, Iowa from 1934-1936. She was then employed at Slater High School, Slater, Iowa in 1936 teaching commercial and math subjects until she retired in 1957. In her fourth year of teaching she became the Principal as well. While teaching she coached a basketball team after the coach became ill with a heart attack. Ruth worked the summer months at the Slater Branch College Bank from 1943-1945 and full time at the Slater State Bank from 1958-1960.

She enjoyed life and had many hobbies including doing handwork, making quilts and sewing lap robes and wheel chair bags for the VA.

Ruth and her husband, Clarence wintered in Brownsville, Texas and Mesa, Arizona until they moved to Mesa in 1970. Ruth moved back to Iowa in May 2002 and lived in an independent-living apartment at the Madrid Home and later moved to Ballard Creek Assisted Living Community in Huxley in September 2004.

Ruth is survived by a step-daughter, Adrianna Kinker; two step-grandchildren, Sandra Foreman (John) and David Kinker (Julie); and four step-great grandchildren. Ruth will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and step son-in-law, Carrol.

Memorials may be given to Ballard Creek Assisted Living Community at Huxley, or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Slater.

Soderstrum Riis Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
