LAST RITES FOR BUSINESS MAN
O. M. GROVE WAS LIFELONG RESIDENT OF THE ROLAND COMMUNITY
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for O. M. Grove at the Grove residence and at Salem church, Rev. Olaf Holen officiating, assisted by Rev. Edward Duea of Dows. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. A large number of people were present, many of whom came from neighboring communities.
Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Miss Harriette Lura, Mrs. Cyrus Thompson, O. S. Boyd, and Jos. O. Johnson. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, Willard C. Grove, Palmer Teig, Erwin Eggland, Richard Eggland, Grant Eggland and Harold McCord.
Oscar M. Grove was born on October 12, 1871, the son of Mons C. and Anna Grove, on the Grove homestead one mile south of Roland, and died at his home in Roland April 12, 1932, at the age of 60 years and 6 months.
He received an early education in the rural schools of this community, where he early showed ability in his business associations. He grew to manhood in the community, and in the year of 1890 he became employed by Duea & Stole in the hardware business at Roland, which business, together with his father, Mons C. Grove and brother, M. N. Grove, he purchased from Duea & Stole in the spring of 1892. He continued to operate the hardware store with the father and brother until 1904. In the spring of 1905 he entered the employ of the Farmers Savings Bank, where his business acumen and kindly manner gradually promoted him to the position of president of the Farmers Savings Bank, which position he held at the time of the consolidation of this bank with the First National Bank in the spring of 1924. He then became local agent for several insurance companies, in which work he was engaged at the time of his death.
He was also interested in the mercantile business of Grove, Jacobson & Duea 27 years ago, although he took no active part in conducting the business. He always took an active interest in the affairs of the community and served for several years on the town council.
He was united in marriage to Malinda Eggland on July 7, 1905, who, together with an adopted son, Roy, survives him. He is also survived by two brothers, Martin N. Grove of Roland, and Edward R. Grove of Ames, and two sisters, Mrs. K. P. Teig of Roland, and Mrs. Earl McCord of Collins.
He was born, lived and died in the community, and a great number of his friends were in attendance at the funeral on Saturday to pay their tribute to their departed friend. Mr. Grove was a member of Kohinoor Lodge, No. 576, A. F. & A. M.
During his last days he sought and won assurance of his salvation in our Blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and he has gone to eternal happiness in Heaven.
