The Nevada Representative, Nevada, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, February 19, 1879.
W. C. Carr, no more.
One of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Story county, W. C. Carr, of Collins township, died on Wednesday of last week, after an illness of about six weeks. Just after Christmas, he drove across the country to Mitchellville and back through a cold storm, and when he returned was so chilled that it was for hours before he recovered his normal condition. That exposure gave him a severe cold which took the form of inflammation of the bone of the right thigh. He was attended by the best physicians of the county, who operated upon the leg in the way of opening it to the bone, and who did for him all that skill could do. But so severe was the disease, and so firmly fastened upon him, that upon Monday preceding his death, when his leg was again examined, the bone was found to be entirely dead and the flesh wholly loose and decayed around it. From that moment all hope was extinct, and he rapidly sank away, and on Wednesday morning breathed his last.
W. C. Carr was one of the oldest settlers in the county, having lived here for over twenty years, and always upon the same farm in Collins township. If we are not mistaken, he was the first supervisor from that township under the old supervisor system. He was also a member of the Board since the number was reduced to three, and was chairman during that eventful year when the vote was taken for the new court house. He will ever by remembered as one of the finest citizens of Story county, and his memory will linger long and kindly with his neighbors and numerous friends.
