Richard Anderson Hughes II, Ph.D., of Ames, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010.
Born in Lambertville, N.J., to Geraldine Lydia (nee Saunders) and Richard A. Hughes, he graduated from Lambertville High School in 1955 and in 1959 married Judith Amy Olyphant, of Point Pleasant, Pa. Dr. Hughes graduated from Trenton Jr. College in 1962, earned B.S., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University in 1964, 1966 and 1968, and then did post-doctoral work at the University of Pittsburgh and the associated V.A. Hospital. He was on the faculty at Virginia Tech before moving to the Department of Psychology at Iowa State University in 1975, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. At ISU he chaired the neuroscience program, and was named the 1990 Ruth W. Swenson Outstanding Academic Adviser in recognition of the decade he served as undergraduate advising coordinator for psychology majors. Dr. Hughes was also a scuba enthusiast and dive instructor.
He is survived by his sister, Diana Meyers; and his children, Jessica Amy Hughes and Timothy Richard Hughes.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Johann Cooper.
Contributions may be given to the Kenneth Sufka Undergraduate Scholarship in Psychology, established by one of Dr. Hughes’ graduate students in honor of his inspiration, kindness and generosity in student mentoring, via the ISU Foundation.
