Lila Naomi Uthe, age 87, died peacefully at Story County Senior Care, Nevada, Iowa, on December 15, 2009, surrounded by family.

Family will receive friends at Bacon Funeral Home, Nevada, Iowa, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada, Iowa, Saturday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m. with burial following at the Nevada Catholic Cemetery.

Lila was born on December 1, 1922, in Gilbert, Iowa, to Arthur and Alma (Anderson) Mortvedt. The oldest of three children, Lila graduated from Gilbert High School in 1940. After graduation Lila worked at the Ames Airport and at the Gilbert Co-op Elevator where she met the dashing young Sylvester Uthe. Lila and Sylvester were married at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in rural Gilbert on Tuesday, January 18, 1944. Following a wedding trip to Des Moines, the couple took up residence in the Uthe family home place where Sylvester farmed.

Two years later the couple moved to a farm south of Ames, Iowa, where they raised five children instilling the importance of family and faith. In 1970 they bought a farm south of Nevada where they lived for over thirty years. Lila enjoyed gardening, cooking, listening to farm markets, and spoiling her grandchildren who kept her young at heart.

Lila was a member of the neighborhood Might Like Us Club, the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Lila is survived by her children Linda Uthe of Nevada; Marlene (Lyle) Borkowski of Manning, Iowa; Karen (Alan) Knaphus of McCallsburg, Iowa; and Doug (Sue) Uthe of Nevada; and her brother Wendell (Marilyn) Mortvedt of Slater. Lila will be missed by her grandchildren Renee and Ross Uthe and Kari and Amy Borkowski.

Lila was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Sylvester; daughter Anita Uthe; her parents; and her brother Marvin Mortvedt.
