Ron Valline, 83, of Story City, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at Bethany Manor in Story City. A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 8 at Bethany Manor.
Ron was born May 28, 1926 in Boone, Iowa to Lloyd and Lucille "Lucy" (Peters) Valline. Lloyd bought the bakery in Story City and moved there in 1929.
Ron was graduated valadictorian from the Story City High School in 1944. In August of that year, he was drafted into the army and served in Germany, earning the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. After service, he returned to Iowa to attend the University of Iowa and received a B.A. Degree in journalism in 1953. He was a journalist, writer and editor in New York City. He once wrote a column entitled Ron Valline on the Scene.In 1985, he returned to Iowa. He was a member of the Bertha Bartlett Public Library book club and served on the Library Board.
Ron liked bridge, cribbage, and listening to show tunes and ragtime music. He enjoyed photography and reading.
Ron moved to Bethany Manor from his apartment at Bergengreen in December of 2009.
He is survived by his cousins, Janet Reutter of Pilot Mound and Verdal Sampson of Platteville, Wisconsin as well as many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles.
Memorials may be sent to the Bertha Bartlett Public Library.
