THE STORY CITY HERALD, Story City, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

Gary L. "Buck" Knous, 72, of Story City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009 at Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial was in the Center Cemetery, rural Story City. Visitation was Sunday Oct. 11, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Gary L. "Buck" Knous was born March 9, 1937 in Ames, Iowa to Bernard and Edna (Anderson) Knous. Buck graduated from Story City High School in 1955 and then served in the United States Army. He owned and operated Knous Heating and Cooling from 1960 to 1982. Buck then worked at Iowa State University until his retirement.

He married Shirley Sampson Krough in 1982. They lived north of Stratford and had recently moved back to Story City.

Buck was president of the Boone Valley Izaak Walton League and the shooting range had recently been named after him. He organized the first National Rifle Shoot at Boone Valley Izaak Walton League. Buck enjoyed participating in the Iowa Games and shooting tournaments. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, tinkering and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of Story City; three sons, Brian and his wife Julie Knous of Ames, Brad and his wife Lisa Knous of Eldridge, Iowa, and Lauren and his wife Kristi Knous of Urbandale; two daughters, Brenda Swenson and her husband Bryan of Jewell, and Trina DeMott and her husband Mark of Ann Arbor, Michigan; two stepdaughters, Deb Krough of Coos Bay, Oregon, and Diane Boughton and her husband Larry of Montezuma; a stepson, Todd Krough of Story City; 14 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; a brother, Joe Bill and his wife Kathy Knous of Story City; and a sister, Linda Knous of Loveland, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Gregory; and a brother, Richard "Whitey" Knous.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City assisted the family with the arrangements.
