Marilyn L. Nelson, 75, of McCallsburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at her home. Services are pending at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing.

Marilyn Nelson, 75, of McCallsburg, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at home surrounded by family. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, also at Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Marilyn was born Oct. 2, 1934, in McCallsburg, twin daughter of Sanford and Emma Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in McCallsburg and was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

She graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1952, where she was a standout basketball player.

She was united in marriage to Vern Nelson on Dec.5, 1953, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. To this union four children were born, Kim, Gayle, Dannie and Pamela.

Marilyn and Vern formed Nelson Home Improvement. She was a very important part of this business, painting and doing the refinish work in several of the newly built and remodeled homes. She also did all of the bookwork for the business.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, McCallsburg American Legion Auxiliary and served as president of the McCallsburg Alumni Banquet for the last 17 years. She also had taught Sunday school.

In 2001, Marilyn and Vern were presented the Unsung Hero award by the Ames Noon Rotary and the Tribune. Her interests included family, and she enjoyed working outside in her yard and garden.

She is survived by her husband, Vern, three children, Kim (Kathy) Nelson, Gayle (Larry) Springer, and Pam (Mark) Hendrick, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Nelson, all of McCallsburg. Marilyn loved her eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Loretta (Don) Hornung and Raylene (Tom) Tisdale; two brothers, Stanley (Joyce) Thompson and Terry (Shirley) Thompson; one brother-in-law, Bob (Bobolene) Nelson; one sister-in-law, Mary Engelking; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Marcia; sister, Jolaine; brother, Sterling; one son, Dannie; and one granddaughter. Katie.

Fredregill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
