Charles W. Meyer, 77, of Ames, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Charles W. Meyer, of Ames, son of George and Nona Bargreen Meyer, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Burial will be in Iowa State University Cemetery. A gathering of friends, colleagues and family will be in the spring.

A native of Joliet, Ill., born March 15, 1932, Charles earned a bachelor’s degree. (with honors) and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois followed by service in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill and Fort Bliss. After completing a doctorate degree. in economics at Johns Hopkins University, he moved to Ames; his academic career was at Iowa State University until retirement, teaching public finance.

He spent sabbaticals at the Rural Poverty Institute at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), as a post doctorate in the Center for Health Economics and Law, also in Madison, and at the office of long-range planning for Social Security in Washington, D.C. His research and publications dealt with taxation, Social Security, disability insurance and profit and non-profit hospitals. He served on many university committees, chairing several, including the LAS Honors Program.

He taught at the Economics Institute, a summer program for foreign graduate students admitted to U.S. universities, held at the University of Colorado, and was involved with advising representatives of several emerging countries about social security and the administration of undergraduate programs. He received a Regents Faculty Award in 1994.

He married Donnelle Sedgley in Muscatine in 1964. She and their son, Demian Bourne, survive him.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
