A shocking death by drowning occurred here yesterday about 4 o'clock p.m., little Julia Hove, aged about four years, the daughter of a Norwegian laborer being the victim. Mr. Hove sometime last summer dug a hole in the garden about a rod from the back door of his residence in which he placed a barrel the top of which extended about ten inches above the ground and which was used by the family as a place to store swill during the warm weather, but had not been used for several weeks past and at the time of this occurence contained but about eight inches of water, collected mostly from the fall rains. About three o'clock yesterday, Julia in company with a little brother two years old were playing about the back door until about half past three when the little boy went into the house to take his afternoon nap. After getting him to sleep Mrs. Hove called to Julia who made no answer. Supposing she had gone to a near neighbor she neglected to look for her for a few moments expecting every moment to see her return. At last a search was made when she was found in the barrel with her head at the bottom where she must have been for about half an hour as she was cold when taken out by the grief stricken parents.
