THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 8, 2009.
Robert Frank “Pete” Peters, 88, of Ames, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, in Nevada, Iowa. Services with military rites will be in Columbus, Ind. Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada and Jewell-Rittman Funeral Home in Columbus are assisting.
Born May 9, 1921, in Chicago, Pete was the youngest of Paul and Martha Peters’ five children, two of whom died of influenza before he was born. He grew up playing baseball and later lived in the shadow of Wrigley Field. When he was 18, his father, a pressman, was killed during a period of trade-union-related slayings, and Pete took on an added role in supporting his family.
In 1942, he married Lola Karnberg and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was stationed in McKinney, Texas, until his discharge in 1946. He had dreams of trying out for a professional baseball team in California but chose to return home to his wife and son in Chicago. Within two weeks, he had set up shop as a dental technician, his lifetime career.
The Peters, including children Gary (Melody) Peters and Susan (Jim) Dionne, settled in Torrance, Calif., in the late 1950s. After Lola’s death in 1979, he married Marcia (Seward) Weekly, whose first husband had died. The marriage added three children, Marti (Bob) Elzer, Joyce Williams and Jean Stillman.
Today, their combined family includes 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings; and one great-grandson.
Besides his wife and the Elzers, local family members include two granddaughters and their families: Leslie, Ken, Kellen and Riley Schrimper, of Waukee, and Brenda, Mark, Haven and Zach Witherspoon, of Ames.
