John Hartford Ernest died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009 at Bethany Manor surrounded by family following an extended illness. He was born Aug. 16, 1924, the son of Jay and Alma (Schroeder) Ernest.

John was the beloved father of Cay Ernest Sills (Brad) of Evansville, Wisconsin, Steve Ernest of Story City, and John Ernest of Red Cliff, Colorado. He was a loving grandfather to Justin Sills, Kelly Ernest Kopp (Nick), John Ernest and Kyle and Levi Ernest, and great-grandfather to Ella and Kaitlyn Kopp.

John is survived by his sister, Vivian Osborn (Deer Park, Texas) and nieces Debbie Craver, Sandy Brower, and David Osborn of Texas.

John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. His love of singing to everyone he encountered was infectious as he had a beautiful voice. He was also "no stranger in the kitchen" and contributed to many cookbooks and appetites with his talents.

John donated his body to science for teaching others. A memorial and family burial of ashes will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to extend appreciation to Iowa Hospice and Bethany Manor nursing staff for their compassionate care.
