Lars H. Martens, 94, of Roland, died Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 26th at 1:30 p.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland with burial to follow in the Roland Cemetery. A visitation of family and friends was Tuesday, August 25th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland.
Lars H. Martens was born May 6, 1915 to Peter and Bertha (Hegland) Martens in Roland, Iowa. He graduated Roland High School in 1936 and served in the 34th Division of the United States Army during WWII. Lars and Patricia Gibbs were married August 19, 1951. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifetime member of Bergen. Lars was employed by Todd and Sargent and the Roland-Story Community Schools. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Forty n Eight. Lars enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family.
Lars is survived by his wife Pat of Roland; two daughters, Cheri (Kenneth) Myers of Roland, and Karen (David) Jamison of Ames; two sons, Alan (Glenda) Martens of Des Moines, and Steve Martens of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Marjorie Seltun.
Memorials may be designated to Bergen Lutheran Church or the Roland American Legion.
Soderstrum Funeral Home in Roland has been entrusted by the family with arrangements.
