Harriett Louise (Rosell) Manion, 87, of Ames, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Northcrest Health Care Center. A Mass in celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. The family will greet friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Harriett Manion was born June 25, 1922, in Taylors Falls, Minn., to Andreas and Louella (Stannard) Rosell. During her school years, she lived in Cambridge, Minn., moving to Willmar, Minn., as a high school sophomore. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1940. She was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until enlisting in the U.S. Navy (WAVES). She completed the rank of yeoman first class. She was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base, where she met Melvin Manion. The two were married Sept. 16, 1946, in What Cheer. Melvin preceded her in death just five months before their 50th anniversary.
She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Ames Woman’s Club, Catholic Daughters and several bridge clubs. She and her husband had been volunteers at Mary Greeley Medical Center in the Hospitality Shop and delivering menus and meals on wheels.
She is survived by three sons, Steven, of Austin, Texas, Thomas (Beth), of Austin, Texas, and David (Gayl), of Eden Prairie, Minn.; two daughters, Janis (Walt) Bones, of Chancellor, S.D., and Michelle (Tom) Jones, of Toms River, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Christine, Lisa and Ryan Bones, Matthew and Whitney Jones, Mikaela and Amanda Manion, and Hannah and Joshua Manion; and one sister, Jane Rastas, of Madison, Wis.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Wheeler.
